Abilene grew up around the railroad. The city says it was established in March 1881, when the Texas and Pacific line was finished, and that ranchers and businessmen steered the tracks here instead of through Buffalo Gap. Today it's the hub of the 22-county Big Country, with about 120,000 people inside the city limits and three universities.

That's a lot of houses, and West Texas bugs aren't shy about them. This line handles all of it: scorpions climbing into the attic, subterranean termites coming up through the slab, roaches, ants, fall crickets, brown recluse spiders in the closet boxes, and bed bugs somebody brought home. You call, we hand you off to a licensed pest company that runs its own shop and covers your side of town, and they come out and give you a price.

How the call works

  1. One call, any bug

Scorpions, termites, roaches, crickets, wasps, fleas, mice. Tell us what it is, or what it looks like, and we'll send the call to the right kind of company.

  2. A real person picks up

During business hours, you talk to somebody. Say what you're seeing and what part of town you're in. That's about all it takes.

  3. Prices come from the provider

We don't quote over the phone. The company that looks at your house gives you the number. Here's how it works.

  4. Local towns too

Wylie, Potosi, Tye, Merkel, Clyde, Baird, Buffalo Gap and the rest of the area. See the service areas.

Why Abilene houses get bugs

Start with the weather. The National Weather Service office in San Angelo puts Abilene's normal yearly rain at 25.24 inches. In 2023 the city hit 100 degrees or higher on 66 days, against a normal of 12. That kind of heat sends bugs looking for cool, damp spots, and a house is full of them: under sinks, in bathrooms, behind the washer, in the attic at night. Texas A&M notes that striped bark scorpions are often found in attics and may move into living spaces to get away from attic heat.

Then the rain comes, and things move again. Texas A&M says field cricket numbers run highest in August and September when a summer drought is broken by rain and cooler weather. That's when the front of every lit-up store and porch in town is crunchy. Spring, as the weather warms, is when subterranean termites swarm.

The houses matter too. The neighborhoods south of downtown around Sayles Boulevard were platted in the 1890s and became the city's well-to-do part of town during the 1920s boom. Older homes like those have more cracks, more wood near the ground and more gaps around old pipes. Newer slab homes on the far south side and out in Wylie and Potosi sit on land that was mostly rural not long ago, and scorpions, crickets and ants don't know the property lines changed.

Out in the county, barns, shops and stacked lumber give mice, spiders and scorpions plenty of cover. If you're on acreage near Buffalo Gap or Tuscola, mention the outbuildings when you call.

The Abilene pest year

Spring

Termite swarmers come out, ants rebuild after winter, and wasps start new nests under the eaves. Good time for a termite inspection.

Summer

Heat drives scorpions and roaches toward water inside. Mosquitoes breed in anything holding water after a storm. Keep the scorpion checklist handy.

Fall

Cricket season, usually peaking in August and September. Then mice start looking for a warm spot as nights cool off. Turn off outdoor lights you don't need.

Winter

Quieter outside, but German roaches, mice and bed bugs don't care what month it is. Good time to seal gaps before spring.
